Two hours straight west of Salt Lake City, on I-80, right before you get to mile marker number 10, is a place some have called the best rest stop in the country. I must say, I have to agree! The Bonneville Salt Flats are a place like no where else. Motorcar racing has taken place at the Salt Flats since 1914. Racing takes place at part of the Bonneville Salt Flats known as the Bonneville Speedway. There are several major land speed events that take place at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Bonneville “Speed Week” takes place mid-August followed by “World of Speed” in September and the “World Finals” take place early October. Now there is a reason that these events take place at those times of year. On June 13th, the day these photos were taken, the Bonneville Speedway was covered in water and resembled a lake. The area right off of the freeway where these photos were taken was mostly dry, with patches of water, although the ground was soggy and wet even in the areas that appeared dry. The water was evaporating so quickly that after we wrapped this shoot, the area that had had water in it while I was shooting had mostly disappeared!
I was so excited to get to photograph 14 year old Preslee on the Salt Flats! Preslee’s optimism and enthusiasm were contagious! Big thanks to Tori, Preslee’s mom, for giving me the opportunity to photograph her lovely daughter! Tori and Preslee I have a feeling that I will be seeing a lot of each other in the future! I am so excited that you are moving to Meridian close to where I live! I can’t wait to see some of these photos hanging up in your beautiful new home here in Idaho! Good luck on your move and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help! xo, Rebecca
This photo pictured above, was printed as a stunning 30×40
The water covering the surface of the Flats made for some amazing photos with the clouds reflecting off of the ground making it look like Preslee was taking a walk in the clouds.
It might look like Preslee is sitting on dry ground here, but the towel, along with Preslee’s dress, was soaking wet when she stood up!
But of course Preslee kept a smile on her face the whole time!
The Salt Flats sort of appeared like they were an enormous snow covered field which made Preslee’s beach attire look even cooler!
I loved Preslee and Tori’s “roll-with-it” attitude and the big blanket Tori brought to hold up so Preslee could do her wardrobe changes!
With that smile, Preslee is sure to make lots of new friends quickly at her new school!
Preslee was even willing to lay on the soggy, salty surface of the Flats to get some fun shots!
Tori and Preslee brought along this frame to bring to life a shot idea they had. I hope I got what they had in mind! I love it when clients have some fun things they want to try!
I love this shot of mother and daughter walking towards the horizon!
Even the air was salty and when I licked my lips I could taste the salt.
It was a great day to be on the Salt Flats!
Happy trails Tori and Preslee! See you in my neck-o-the-woods soon!
